Memory Lane - 1976 SF 49ers Preview
Head coach Dick Nolan had QB troubles after John Brodie retired in 1973. In 1975 Nolan went 5-9 while going through three QB’s which led to his firing. For the 1976 season SF hired Monte Clark who was Don Shula’s offensive line coach.

QB Steve Spurrier, who was supposed to replace Brodie, was traded to TB. SF needed a QB and sent QB Tom Owen, two first round 1976 picks and first and second round picks in 1977 to NE for Jim Plunkett. A homecoming for Plunkett who went to college at Stanford. SF didn’t have a strong running game in ‘75 but Delvin Williams had a 5.2 average on 117 carries and he is expected to be the featured runner this season. They have WR’s Gene Washington and unproven players behind him.
This team only has one Hall of Fame player on its roster. However, WR Gene Washington, was a 3 time All Pro and a 4 time Pro Bowl selection early in his career should get some consideration. The latter part of his career was with woeful teams and quarterbacks. QB Jim Plunkett had a turbulent start to his career. He was on teams void of all star talent and couldn't carry those teams on his back. His time in SF was short lived but the second part of his career is where he tasted success. There are players in the Hall of Fame with better numbers but less success. A two time Super Bowl QB should be considered for enshrinement into Canton.

On the defensive side, the D-line consists of Cedrick Hardman, Tommy Hart and Cleveland Elam. The secondary has Jimmy Johnson (HOF). They have the building blocks but can they take the next step and become a good defense?
The 1976 draft additions: G Randy Cross and G John Ayers.
